Группа эта, изначально вдохновленная творчеством "Madness", образовалась в середине 80-х годов. Оригинальный состав включал в себя всего трех человек - Джона Спенса, Эрика Стефани и его сестренку Гвен .Конечно, в команде были и другие музыканты, но они долго на месте не задерживались, и первое время в коллективе исповедовалась политика открытых дверей. Пока "No Doubt" развлекались небольшими концертами в окрестностях Оранж Каунти, к их компании прибился басист-индиец Тони Канал , с ходу замутивший роман с Гвен. В декабре 1987 года неожиданно для всех Спенс застрелился, и группа чуть было не распалась, но уже спустя несколько недель ребята решили продолжить деятельность. Ведущие вокальные партии теперь взяла на себя Гвен, а через некоторое время случились две ключевые кадровые замены: на роль гитариста пришел Том Дьюмонт из метал-банды "Rising", а ударную установку оккупировал Адриан Янг .
